Vitoria-Gasteiz is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures that could reach 40 degrees Celsius. In response, the city's climate shelters provide a simple option for those seeking respite from the heat, a place to rest, drink water, or avoid the harshest hours outdoors. Using these shelters does not require feeling unwell; they also serve as a convenient spot for a break between errands or to spend the afternoon in a more pleasant environment.
The city has 29 climate shelters located in municipal buildings and those of other entities, including civic centers, sports complexes, museums, and shopping centers. These spaces offer seating areas and free water, according to municipal information.
Swimming pools are another clear alternative during heatwave days. Vitoria has facilities in several civic centers and the Gamarra and Mendizorrotza complexes, which are popular spots for escaping the high temperatures. During busy periods, it's advisable to go with ample time, check schedules, and be aware that central hours tend to be the most crowded.
Day tickets and summer passes for Gamarra can be an economical choice for frequent visitors. The season pass offers better value than five single entries for those over a certain age. Mendizorrotza's day tickets, available by age group, are priced higher than Gamarra's.
Additionally, the bathing areas around the reservoirs, such as Landa and Garaio, are popular destinations for spending the day by the water. Access by bus is also an option, helping to avoid car use and coordinate with the specific service schedules to the reservoirs.
Garaio features beach areas, an information office, marked trails, viewpoints, fountains, restrooms, and showers, along with lifeguard services. Landa offers a recreational area, picnic spot, adapted restrooms and showers, ramps to the water, and a park-and-ride parking lot with spaces for RVs and individuals with reduced mobility.
Alavabus line 4 (Vitoria-Gasteiz – Narbaiza) stops at Garaio Park from June 1st to September 15th. Line DG05D connects Vitoria-Gasteiz with Eibar via the reservoir, providing access to the Landa area.
Useful services include lifeguards (12:00-20:00), four assistance and rescue posts, and dedicated staff. Adapted facilities ensure accessibility. Animals are prohibited from entering the water but must be leashed outside the bathing zone.
Beyond climate shelters, pools, and reservoirs, Vitoria offers shaded areas in parks like La Florida, El Prado, Arriaga, Salburua, and Olarizu, ideal for walking or sitting in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the hottest central hours of the day.
The general recommendation is straightforward: carry water, wear a hat, use light clothing, and seek shade before the heat becomes unbearable. Climate shelters, swimming pools, and bathing areas are not just resources for extreme situations but also practical ways to adapt plans to increasingly hot days and make the heatwave in Gasteiz more bearable.
