The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council will begin works tomorrow, November 3rd, to create a safe school environment next to the Luis Elejalde-Rogelia de Álvaro school, on Nicaragua street.

The works, with an investment close to 230,000 euros and a three-month timeframe, will transform this dead-end street, currently used for traffic and parking, into a safer and more accessible pedestrian space for students, families, and residents. The project will be carried out by the company Balgorza.
The intervention includes the elimination of parking spaces and the removal of vehicular traffic, while maintaining two access points from Cofradía de Arriaga street to serve existing garages. In front of the school, a wide and clear area will be created, featuring new trees, benches, play elements, and a pavement with colorful geometric shapes. Accessibility will also be improved with gentle slope ramps.
Last Friday, the Councilor for Public Space and Neighborhoods, Miren Fernández de Landa, met with educational center officials to present the project and explain the details of the action and the planned development of the works.
“

"We want school entrances and exits to be safer and calmer moments, without children having to share that space with cars. On Nicaragua street, we are going to reclaim a street that is currently used mainly for parking and turn it into a place where families can meet and students can move more safely."

The works will begin with the adaptation of the new garage accesses. During this first phase, only the spaces at the end of the street will be removed, and once the new ramps are in place, the rest of the parking will be eliminated. The awarded company will place informative signs in building entrances, premises, and garages to inform residents of the planned disruptions.
This intervention is part of the municipal strategy for safe school environments. A few weeks ago, the City Council presented a guide detailing the 29 actions carried out in educational centers in Vitoria-Gasteiz. “Each school has its own needs, and that's why the interventions are different. With the guide we recently presented, we want to publicize the work done and the planned actions, but also to continue involving educational communities in improving their environments,” added the councilor.
