The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has approved a 9.3 million euro investment for the complete renovation of the Principal Theater's stage equipment. The tender for the supply, managed by the Department of Culture and Education, aims to enhance the theater's capabilities, ensuring the quality of performances and accessibility.
The contract will allocate 8 million euros for machinery, lighting, and audiovisual systems, and one million for new seating, orchestra pit, and flooring. The installation of this equipment must be coordinated with the ongoing renovation works at the theater. The technical part of the equipment will have a 15-month deadline, while the seating and flooring lot will be installed within 7 months.
The Principal Theater has been a scenic benchmark in Vitoria-Gasteiz since 1918 and has undergone several reforms. However, it required a deep structural renovation and equipment change to meet the needs of contemporary performing arts. The wooden fly system from 1918 and old mechanisms made it difficult to operate the stage machinery, demanding extensive manual labor and strict safety measures.
The lighting and sound equipment, dating from the 1990s, no longer met modern technical requirements. The new theater will feature LED and digital systems, enabling more sustainable consumption and facilitating technical work. Furthermore, the theater lacked universal accessibility, but the new equipment will guarantee equal access to culture for all individuals.
“"The new theater is not just a renovation; it's a leap in quality. Each of these elements addresses very specific needs of the performing arts world and will be key for the space to truly come alive."
The dossier for the supply of the new stage equipment was approved this Friday. The project aims to provide the Principal Theater with modern tools and current technologies for the 21st century, returning to Vitoria an accessible, safe theater on par with major stages. This will allow it to host performances that previously would not have considered coming to Vitoria-Gasteiz.
