Zarautz Hits 30ºC at Midnight: Equatorial Night Before Hottest Day

Temperatures have barely dropped across much of the region, with today expected to be the peak heat before a slight decrease on Thursday.

Euskalmet and Aemet have issued red alerts for extreme temperatures, with unusual readings like 30.4ºC in Zarautz at midnight.

Several locations in the Basque Country, including Zarautz and Jaizkibel, have experienced nights where temperatures have not fallen below 20ºC for four consecutive nights. Zarautz recorded 30.4ºC at midnight, while Jaizkibel registered 29.3ºC at 4:30 AM.
After midnight, other readings included 27.3ºC in Higer, 26.9ºC in Zegama, 25.3ºC in Santa Clara, and 24.5ºC in Pasaia.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) activated a red alert for extreme temperatures on Sunday, with Euskalmet following suit on Monday. These measures remain in effect today, anticipating another stifling day, though the heat has been relentless for nearly a week.
For Thursday, a temperature drop of five to eight degrees is expected compared to the maximum values recorded in recent days.
