Zarautz City Council has renewed its stream and wetland cleaning service, re-awarding the contract to the company Txukun Lorazaintza, continuing a service in effect since 2015 for the removal of waste from the municipality's main waterways.

The Zarautz City Council has once again awarded the stream and wetland cleaning service in the municipality to the company Txukun Lorazaintza. This contract, which has been in force since 2015, involves the periodic removal of waste from the main waterways and wetland areas within the urban core through two annual campaigns.
The service is organized into two annual campaigns, taking place in April and September, with the September campaign occurring after the celebration of the Euskal Jaiak. During these operations, various types of waste accumulated in these natural spaces are collected, including plastics, metals, polystyrene, tires, bicycles, and even large objects.

"Although citizen awareness has increased in recent years, there is still a significant presence of waste in streams and wetlands."

The council emphasizes that, despite the necessity of this service, its existence should ideally not be required. A local councilor for the Environment has described the situation as “deplorable” and highlighted the ecological value of these spaces. As noted, streams and wetlands host great biodiversity, facilitate contact with nature, and play a fundamental role in the water cycle and flood management.
Given this situation, the Zarautz City Council calls on citizens to respect the natural environment and properly manage waste with the aim of “preserving and protecting the natural spaces of the town”.
