The 'Ez ahazteko gogoratuz' initiative in Zumaia has undertaken a collective memory exercise aimed at recovering women's history and contributions. Participants selected photographs to describe themselves, such as a leafless tree in the Arantzazu forest with a hole and outstretched branches, serving as a metaphor for self-presentation.

The starting point of the initiative was to demonstrate that images can convey more than what is immediately apparent. To achieve this, women used historical family photographs to introduce themselves, revealing contributions that male prominence had overshadowed.

The process has fostered synergies among the participating women. The interviews have allowed for the comparison of personal experiences, such as domestic chores, caregiving responsibilities, or denied educational opportunities. This has promoted empathy and mutual understanding.

The women had a need to speak and listen to each other, and the photographs served as a pretext to share their personal histories. The initiative culminates in an exhibition, supported by the Zumaia City Council, to showcase the work accomplished and make it accessible to people of different generations.

The exhibition will demonstrate that women have also played a significant role in Zumaia's history, and that the town's present has been built thanks to their caregiving and labor, both within and outside the home. The goal is for future generations to reflect on the importance of family, pursuing dreams, and community work.
