The Azkoitia City Council began restoration work this Monday on the Barricas Fountain, one of the town's most emblematic structures, aiming to preserve the monument from damage caused by time and weather conditions.

The project has a cost of 18,029 euros and is expected to be fully completed within four weeks. The intervention's objective is the conservation of the fountain, which shows some damage due to the passage of time and adverse weather.
The planned work includes cleaning the stone and joints, as well as removing degraded cement mortars. Additionally, a biological treatment will be applied to eradicate algae and mosses, which cause damage to the structure, and the water spout will be repaired.

The intervention is based on guidelines of minimal intervention, with the aim, among other purposes, of not altering the patina that time has given to the structure.

The Barricas Fountain is located in one of Azkoitia's most significant historical and monumental areas. The fountain stands in Jesús Bihotz Agurgarria square, completing a prominent monumental complex where it shares prominence with the Etxe-Beltz palace and the parish church of Santa María la Real.
It is a semi-detached neoclassical fountain, carved from gray limestone, featuring two large barrels from which water flows into a rectangular basin. Dated to 1831, the ensemble, a work by Mariano José Lascurain, is topped with a large neoclassical vase on a column drum. The work is a unique example of hydraulic architecture, and the barrels adorning it are a precedent for future decorative solutions where such elements would gain significant prominence.
