Real Sociedad has clinched the Copa del Rey title after a thrilling match against Atlético de Madrid at the Cartuja stadium in Sevilla. The game ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time, and with no goals scored in extra time, the trophy was decided by a penalty shootout. The team, managed by Pellegrino Matarazzo, secured the victory, igniting widespread joy among its supporters.
The goalkeeper from Azpeitia played a crucial role in the penalty shootout, saving two shots and earning the award for the best player of the final. His name was chanted by the txuri-urdin fans at Cartuja, as well as by hundreds of residents gathered at the Sanagustin cultural center in Azpeitia, immediately after the match concluded.
Azpeitia followed the final with great anticipation. The Sanagustin cultural center was packed with people, and after long moments of tension, the evening ended in a festive atmosphere. The match was also watched in various local associations and gastronomic societies, with fireworks launched to celebrate the victory.
“"I am from Azpeitia, from Loyola. I love my town, my friends, my family very much; Azpeitia has given me everything. A big hug to the people of Azpeitia."
This victory is not only for the Azpeitia goalkeeper but also for the physical trainer Oier Agirrezabalaga, also from Azpeitia. The first team's physical trainer was present at Cartuja, and the trophy they bring home is also a result of his dedication. Agirrezabalaga has worked for seventeen years at Zubieta, across various youth categories, and has been the first team's physical trainer since January.
This marks the fourth Copa del Rey title in the history of Real Sociedad's men's team. They previously won the trophy in 1909, 1987, and 2021.
