Orio Prepares to Celebrate Whale Day with Folk Theater and Cultural Events

The town of Orio is getting ready to commemorate Whale Day with a program that includes theatrical performances, talks, and musical acts.

Orio will celebrate Whale Day next Saturday, May 11, with a main event featuring folk theater and a recreation of whale hunting, commemorating the town's tradition.

The celebrations surrounding Whale Day in Orio are progressing, with several events scheduled for the upcoming week. On Tuesday, at 7:00 PM, a talk titled “Sardinatan edo antxoatan ari ziren” will be held at the zimitorio, sharing insights into the fishing tradition.
On Thursday, an exhibition, “Sormen Bizian Lab: Balea,” will open in Herriko Plaza at 5:00 PM. Following this, the Orio txaranga will parade through the streets, and in the evening, a bertsolari dinner will take place at the Balea association, organized by Errikotxia and the Balea Association.
Saturday will be the main day, Whale Day. At 11:45 AM, a street performance will begin on the slope of Kale Nagusia, the zimitorio, Pilliku plaza, the Bentaenea area, and the slope of Herriko Plaza. At 12:30 PM, church bells will ring, signaling the call to the whale hunt, followed by a recreation of the whale hunt in front of Oribazar.
After the hunt, the whale will be brought to the pier, and the main performance will commence, combining theater, dance, and music. To conclude the day, a festival will be held in Herriko Plaza. On Sunday, a concert honoring Benito Lertxundi will be offered at the Karela sports center at 8:00 PM.
