At the event held at Antilla beach in Orio, the Deputy for Sustainability, Jose Ignacio Asensio, and the Mayoress of Orio, Anuska Esnal, among others, officially opened the new season. This year, coastal municipalities will receive a subsidy of 1.7 million euros for comprehensive beach management, more than doubling the resources from the previous year.
In the municipalities of the Urola Kosta region, the beach season will begin on June 13 in Getaria and Zumaia, lasting until September 13; in Orio it will extend from June 15 to September 15; and in Zarautz, which started on June 1, it will run until September 15.
Anuska Esnal highlighted the increasing number of visitors drawn to the sea, presenting a significant challenge for coastal municipalities tasked with preserving natural spaces and providing adequate services while ensuring citizens' quality of life. She emphasized that inter-institutional collaboration is "essential" to achieve this balance.
Jose Ignacio Asensio, for his part, stated that beaches are among the territory's most valuable natural and coexistence spaces, expressing a desire for them to remain safe, accessible, and sustainable. He also noted that holding the inauguration on World Oceans Day serves as a reminder that protecting our seas begins on our beaches.
This season will see reinforced cleaning services, a mobile sanitation team, and improved waste separation. Additionally, the Nik Hondartzak app will provide real-time information, updating flag status and data on accessible bathing facilities.
Regarding environmental awareness, the campaign 'Immerse yourself in the rhythm of the waves this summer' will tour several municipalities to promote responsible and sustainable habits. Various activities are planned, including Mapa Bizia (Living Map), the Gauzaketa lending service, and environmental workshops focused on waste reduction and its impact on marine ecosystems.
