The Getaria City Council has completed two important projects to improve local infrastructure: the comprehensive renovation of the municipal library and the creation of an exclusive changing room for women surfers at the port, with a total investment of 28,365.16 euros.

The Getaria City Council has announced the completion of two significant projects aimed at improving local infrastructure. These include the comprehensive renovation of the municipal library and the establishment of an exclusive changing room for women surfers in the port area.
After being closed since March 31, and taking advantage of the Easter holidays, the Getaria library has reopened its doors following a thorough transformation. The project involved an investment of 15,465.16 euros, funded through a specific allocation in this year's budget. This work was made possible by the close collaboration between municipal brigade workers, library staff, and the furniture assembly team.
The intervention went beyond a mere aesthetic facelift with painted walls; it encompassed a complete functional renovation. Old furniture has been replaced with new pieces, aiming to create a brighter space adapted to current accessibility needs. Regarding the organization of the collection, while the children's and youth sections maintain their usual structure, the adult area features a new configuration. Now, Basque narrative and poetry are presented unified to facilitate searching.
The most notable change is in the consultation section, which is now divided into eight distinct thematic areas: Txoko Morea (Purple Corner), Care and Cooking, Bira (sea, travel, and adventures), World (politics, economy, philosophy, and society), Euskal Herria (history, politics, language, and traditions), Natural Sciences, Culture, and finally, Mountain and Sport. To help Getaria residents familiarize themselves with this new arrangement and the online catalog, the center will offer explanatory sessions throughout April. These sessions will take place on Tuesday afternoons, starting at 5:30 PM, and Wednesday mornings, starting at 11:30 AM.
Furthermore, the Getaria City Council has also announced that it has “responded to a historical demand” from the local surf club, dating back six years. In the public building located in Gaztetape, an exclusive changing room for women has been completed, a “necessary measure given the increasing female presence in this sport,” as highlighted by the Council. Until now, local and visiting female surfers had a limited space that, during the summer season, they had to share with the Red Cross team, which created daily inconveniences.
To address this issue, the Getaria City Council has invested 12,900 euros to create this exclusive changing room for women surfers. The Getaria City Council has expressed its gratitude to all involved workers. Additionally, they encourage Getaria residents to “discover, enjoy, and care for” these spaces, which “ultimately belong to the entire community of Getaria.”
