The PNV municipal group in Orio has highlighted the need to build a new pelota court and has urged the EH Bildu government to promote a specific project for this key infrastructure. Two weeks ago, the last section of the fronton wall and the adjacent house were demolished, and now, with citizen input, the town hall must decide on its new location. Two options have been presented: Abaromendi, which strengthens the sports aspect, and Palota, which combines sports and culture.
As the PNV has criticized, the EH Bildu municipal government, "after governing for almost eight years, has not been able to promote a serious and comprehensive plan to prevent the municipality from reaching 2026 without this basic infrastructure." In the PNV's view, the debate cannot "focus solely on the location of the future pelota court, but, above all, on defining what facilities the municipality needs and what uses they should have."
In the coming weeks, the municipal government will launch a public consultation to ask citizens about the location. However, for the PNV, the "main question" has not yet been addressed: what type of fronton does Orio currently need and want. "We are not just talking about building a building, but about creating a useful, adequate infrastructure designed for Orio's future," they emphasized.
EH Bildu has argued that "the lack of progress is a consequence of waiting for the definition of the General Urban Planning Plan." According to the PNV, this explanation "is not enough," as "not yet having the urban planning document did not prevent reflection, planning, and work on Orio's real needs and the characteristics the new pelota court should have."
