Carmen Unanue Irureta, known by the nickname "Pattana", was born on August 25, 1926, and today she is celebrating her 100th birthday in the company of her whole family. It is a day full of excitement and emotion for her loved ones, who have stated: "We love her very much and we are very happy today."
Carmen has done a lot of work in her life. In her youth, she worked in the family screw company and also in sewing, like many women of her time. Later, she dedicated herself to sewing costumes for the ikastola dancers, as her husband, Julen Sagarzazu "Julen Txiki", was closely linked to the world of dance. Carmen was widowed in 2011.
The couple had four children: Mailu, Ina, Belen, and Javier. The latter was a well-known footballer, a player from Real Sociedad's youth academy. Sadly, Javier passed away.
Today is a happy day at the Sagarzazu-Unanue home, and the Azkoitia City Council wanted to offer a small tribute to Carmen on behalf of the town. Council members Sonia Vazquez and Marijose Arregi met with her to congratulate her and present her with a commemorative gift and a bouquet of flowers.
