The objective of this project is to transform the area into a more accessible, functional, and welcoming space, addressing the shortcomings and needs identified by residents, groups, and regular users. The origin of this intervention dates back to the fall of the sapling of the Tree of Gernika, located next to the Frontón Txiki, due to a gale in the autumn of 2023.
That incident left a vacant space that the Council decided not to occupy unilaterally. Instead, it opted to launch a collective reflection, initiating a participatory process that involved the collaboration of Hiritik At and OinHerri.
The outcome of this process is a clear commitment to an obstacle-free, multifunctional space with increased vegetation. The project also includes the installation of a roof attached to the frontón, the expansion of the space by removing some parking spots and replacing them with benches and green areas, as well as the placement of bleachers and a ping-pong table. The ground will also be renovated and leveled to improve accessibility.
The process behind the works aimed to define how the 200,000 euro allocation from the Azpeitia City Council for the project's realization would be used. The challenge was to convert this space into a meeting point for citizens, based on contributions from residents and various municipal departments such as Equality, Education, Urban Planning, Youth, Local Police, Emakumeen Txokoa, and Ekoetxe, in addition to political representatives.
The first phase of the process involved a series of meetings where the needs of children, adolescents, foreign women, caregivers, people with functional diversity, and residents of the old town were gathered. Contributions from these individuals were complemented by those from organizations already using the space adjacent to Frontoi Txiki, including Ilunpe Pilota Elkartea, Zezen Beltz, Elkar Ekin, Bertan, Jauzika, Baigera, Atzegi, Gautena, Marea Urdina, Goienetxe, Osamen, and ONCE, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the area and its usage.
The subsequent phase focused on the working group developing a proposal for the use of the space, after analyzing the contributions from the first stage. The final result was presented to the participating stakeholders to gather further input. The project concluded with a meeting where the approved spatial transformation was unveiled, and the participatory process was evaluated. Now, all this work will materialize with the initial redevelopment and conditioning efforts on Done Jakue street and the surroundings of Frontoi Txiki starting next Monday.
