As is its annual custom, the Azpeitia Photographic Association (AAE) has inaugurated the exhibition of photographs submitted to its Sokamuturra competition, which revolves around the carnival bull, with an award ceremony at the Betharram hall. This year marks the 45th edition of the competition, which was created by Imanol Elias and bears his name since his passing.
Ander Uria has been named this year's winner of the Sokamuturra competition with his photograph El ruido en silencio. This is the second time Uria has secured first prize, having also won the competition in 2023. The second prize went to Iñigo Olarte for his photograph Zain naukazu, while Alberto Beloki secured third place with his image titled Zezenaren aurrean. The prize for fifth place was awarded to Iñaki Etxenagusia for his photograph Pase bikoitza, and the final fifth prize in the sokamuturra category went to Josu Altzelairentzat for his image Sokamuturra 5.
Twenty photographers submitted their works to this year's competition, and a total of 140 photographs are on display in the exhibition that opened today. One hundred of these are black and white images captured during the carnival sokamuturra events, and they are exhibited alongside 40 color photographs that portray the festive atmosphere of the carnivals, also at Betharram this year. The AAE presented a single award in the color category, named after Iñaki Joaristi Altzarte, which was received by Adiel Zabala for his photograph Ate handitik.
The awards were presented this afternoon at Betharram by members of the AAE, councilor Mikel Odriozola, Imanol Elias's widow Itziar Oiarzabal, and Iñaki Joaristi's widow Miren Madrazo. The exhibition will be open daily until the 26th of this month, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on weekdays and from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on weekends.
