The Donejakue street in Azpeitia is set to undergo a complete transformation. Works have already commenced and are expected to last approximately two and a half months. This project aims to renovate the space adjacent to Frontoi Txiki through a participatory process.
Since the sapling of the Gernika tree fell on Donejakue kalea, the Azpeitia City Council, in collaboration with various social agents, launched a forum last spring. The objective was to regenerate the area and explore alternatives for the space next to Frontoi Txiki. This initiative was promoted by Hiritik At and OinHerri, who advocate for a new strategy to rethink municipal organization from the perspective of local development, childhood culture, and participation.
The initiative involved several phases to understand the needs of various stakeholders who use the space, including Ilunpe pilota elkartea, Zezen Beltz, Elkar-ekin, Bertan, Jauzika, and Baigera. Additionally, groups of citizens who regularly use the space, such as children, adolescents, caregivers, and migrant women, were consulted. After gathering and analyzing the proposals, a meeting was held to present the definitive project, which will lead to the transformation of the area through a pioneering process in Azpeitia.
Those involved in the design have opted for the creation of a free, obstacle-free, multifunctional, and welcoming space, which will also feature more vegetation. The area will also include a roof attached to the fronton. According to municipal sources, the space itself will be slightly expanded, removing some parking spaces and replacing them with benches and plants. Grandstands and a ping-pong table will also be installed, among other elements. Furthermore, the ground will be altered and leveled to improve accessibility.
The works have a budget of 84,872 euros and are expected to last approximately two and a half months.
