Thousands of citizens gathered today at the Arantzazu sanctuary to celebrate the Day of the Mother, with some walking from Oñati, others arriving by bus, and many by car. Attendees included not only locals but also residents from towns such as Bidania, Aia, Agurain, and Arrasate.
Representatives from various institutions were also present, including Bakartxo Tejeria, President of the Basque Parliament; Xabier Ezeizabarrena, President of the General Assemblies of Gipuzkoa; Maria Ubarretxena, spokesperson for the Basque Government; Eider Mendoza, General Deputy of Gipuzkoa; and Izaro Elorza, Mayor of Oñati. Additionally, several deputies, regional parliamentarians, and council members from Oñati attended. Elorza, Ubarretxena, and Mendoza highlighted the significance of the celebration.
The Bishop of Gipuzkoa, Fernando Prado, officiated the mass that began at midday, accompanied by several Franciscans. The Oñati choir provided musical accompaniment, and the basilica of the Arantzazu sanctuary was completely full, with even the last seats occupied.
Furthermore, workers from Itasua used this significant day to report on their situation. Several employees protested at Arantzazu with a banner, and a workers' representative handed a letter to Maria Ubarretxena, explaining their circumstances and requesting assistance for a resolution.
