The sovereignist political formation does not reject the fish farm project intended to revitalize the old Lemoiz nuclear power plant, and even sees promising potential in it. However, the coalition has many doubts about the actual scope of the project, which aims to produce 3,000 tons of sole annually starting from 2030.
A spokesperson for the coalition, alongside the mayor of Lemoiz, made two key requests: first, that actions be taken integrally, considering not only the building area but also the entire surroundings and green spaces; and second, that public opinion be taken into account by articulating mechanisms for social participation in utilizing the area.
“"We have not conceptually opposed it since discussions began in 2017 about setting up a fish farm there."
The spokesperson indicated that the current project raises many questions, especially regarding its economic implications. A public investment of at least 60 million euros is anticipated, and its returns need to be analyzed. They demand to know the fine print to determine if the project is convincing. Doubts were also expressed about the realism of the published infographic depicting the plant's future appearance.
Furthermore, the party perceives a "lack of integrality," as plans seem to focus on the 40 industrial hectares, without including the 140 hectares of coastline, adjacent slopes, the security perimeter, and the reservoir. They emphasized that this entire area should be part of the transformation. They believe there is potential for it to be a "driving element," but a "country agreement" is essential for this, to which they are open.
EH Bildu also considers citizen participation and the involvement of local administrations crucial. The Lemoiz City Council, which holds urban planning competencies, is currently drafting its General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), which must address the future of the nuclear power plant. The mayor stated that this is the opportune moment to tackle the issue, as there has been a change in attitude from the Basque Government in recent days.
