The senior women's team of Berango Urduliz Handball has achieved a historic promotion to the national league after securing all victories in the promotion phase held in Maliaño.

After finishing as runners-up in the Euskadi championship, the girls from Berango Urduliz Handball had the opportunity to play in the promotion phase over the weekend, from May 22nd to 24th, in Maliaño, Cantabria. They completed a "perfect" phase by achieving three victories.
The team played its first match on Friday against Balonmano Villafranca, winning with a clear score of 16-28. On Saturday, they defeated the home team El Pendo Camargo 20-27, demonstrating solidity even under high pressure. Sunday brought the perfect conclusion against Lanzarote San Jose Obrero; it was an intense, fast-paced match, which they finished with a score of 29-34.
With this result, the team achieves promotion to the national league for the second time; the first was on their own merit, as they were previously invited. Furthermore, the team had a "fortress" in the stands, with numerous fans from Uribe Kosta filling up to three-quarters of the pavilion.
Individual awards also reflected the team's level: Ixone Aparicio was chosen as the best goalkeeper of the championship, and Leize Zuluaga received the award for best player.
Coach Diego Izquierdo has emphasized that the promotion is not a chance success, but the result of 50 years of youth academy work and a commitment to regional sports. "Although it's not the easiest way to achieve victories, we try to follow our philosophy, and our players progress from youth to senior levels; thus, out of the 19 players who competed in the championship, 18 are from our academy," he stated.
However, the coach has warned that promotion to the national league brings greater economic and logistical challenges for the club, and has appealed for support from their sponsoring business network to consolidate the project at the national level and ensure women's handball continues to establish itself in Uribe Kosta. "Now, our goal is to maintain the category and learn as much as possible, as we have very young players: the oldest is 25 years old. However, if it's about passion, no one beats us there, that's clear," he added.
