At the beginning of the 20th century, most flour mills ceased operations due to low efficiency. However, among the few that remain standing in Gipuzkoa, the Igara mill stands out as a significant example of historical heritage located by the Sistiaga stream.
This hydraulic mill uses a canal to divert water into a 6.5-meter deep reservoir, accumulating potential energy. When the lock is opened, the water drives the lower wheel, which in turn moves the millstones to grind the grain into flour.
Today, the mill serves as an educational space prepared for visitors. On May 17th, for the Gipuzkoa Mill Day, the facilities in Alegia will join an open-house event held across thirty municipalities to showcase this ancient technology.
