The coast of Lekeitio offers spectacular landscapes, including the fabulous views of the Cantabrian Sea from Garraitz island. However, behind the idyllic image of the rock, there is a recurring problem of tourist rescues that has overwhelmed the council and become a logistical nightmare for emergency services. For this reason, the local administration has asked the Directorate of Ports and Maritime Affairs of the Basque Government to take action, as it falls within its jurisdiction.
A total of 14 people had to be rescued in just four days during the recent Easter holidays, after being trapped by the tide on the island. Rescue resources were stretched by visitors unable to return to dry land on their own. Dangerous situations even occurred, and some individuals had to be transferred to the Gernika hospital.
“"It is necessary to draw up an urgent plan. Coordination between the affected institutions is absolutely necessary given the increase in risk situations being recorded. But above all, the competent administrations need to take measures, something that is not being done."
The wave of interventions has reopened the debate on how to manage visits and protect this natural and heritage site. Thus, the City Council (EH Bildu) held the first meeting of the inter-institutional table created to analyze the situation. The meeting was attended by the Directorate of Ports of the Basque Government, the Provincial Council, and the Red Cross, in addition to the Ertzaintza and the Municipal Police.
Emergency services emphasize that we live on the Cantabrian Sea, which means that on our coast there can be more than 4 meters difference between high and low tide. It is essential to be informed.
