The digital platform Berriro was officially presented in Leioa, aiming to strengthen the competitiveness of local commerce and personal services in Euskadi. This model is pioneering both in the Basque Country and globally, offering small businesses advanced technological tools such as digital wallets and personalized promotions.
Unlike individual systems, Berriro establishes a connected network across Euskadi that encourages repeat purchases in neighborhoods and towns. The platform was designed by the merchants themselves, integrating the diverse realities of local trade.
Currently, the Berriro experience is rolling out in the Txorierri, Erandio, and Leioa regions, following its successful initial launch in the Arratia Nervión and Durangaldea areas. The project receives strategic backing from the Basque Government's Department of Tourism, Trade, and Consumption, which also provides a €5 incentive on the first purchase over €20, up to a regional limit of €8,000.
Bizkaidendak president, José Andrés Cebrecos Goikoetxea, highlighted that Berriro's key competitive advantage is the creation of a connected network. "It's not about each shop fighting alone with its own tool, but about generating a solid ecosystem throughout Euskadi where customers feel part of a local consumption community," he stated.
Nekane Aiarza, Deputy Mayor of Derio, emphasized the technological impact on revitalizing local commerce and encouraged participation from local customers, associations, and businesses.
The deployment of Berriro is supported by the commitment and funding from the Basque Government's Department of Tourism, Trade, and Consumption. Department officials stressed the importance of public-private collaboration for maintaining vibrant urban environments. Jakes Aguirrezabal Iribar, Undersecretary for Tourism, Trade, and Consumption, noted, "With BERRIRO, we are taking a decisive step to enable local commerce to compete in loyalty and digitalization." He added that "we want our businesses to have modern tools to better understand their customers, create new consumption opportunities, and strengthen ties with citizens."
