Amaia Agirre, the current mayor of Getxo, has announced her decision not to seek re-election in the 2027 municipal elections. This means she will conclude her time leading the Getxo City Council at the end of the current legislative period. Agirre described her choice as “a personal decision that has not been easy, but has been deeply thought out”.
Iñigo Ansola, president of the Bizkai Buru Batzar of the PNV, has conveyed his gratitude to Agirre for her work and the “involvement and commitment” she has shown throughout her mandate. The Basque Nationalist Party has indicated that the internal process to designate the person who will lead the jeltzale candidacy in Getxo will commence in the coming days.
“"A personal decision that has not been easy, but has been deeply thought out."
In a letter addressed to party members, Agirre explained that the end of the legislature coincides with the closing of a political chapter. She advocated for the necessity of making way for “new people, new perspectives, and new impulses” to continue the municipality's development. In her message, she also underscored the importance of renewal within the political project, aiming to continue building a “cohesive, modern, and future-oriented Getxo”.
Despite her decision not to contest the upcoming elections, Agirre affirmed that she will maintain her institutional commitment until the end of her term, ensuring she will continue to perform her duties “with the same dedication, responsibility, and enthusiasm”. The mayor also reiterated her connection to the PNV project and expressed gratitude for the support received from her party colleagues over the past years.
In her assessment, she highlighted an “intense” period, marked by challenges and achievements, during which, she stated, the foundations for “a new era” for the municipality have been laid. In this regard, she valued having shared an “intense path, full of challenges and also achievements” in recent years.
