The University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) ranks among the top 200 universities worldwide in Artificial Intelligence, Chemical Engineering, and Education, according to the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking. Furthermore, it is among the top ten state universities recognized in 15 subjects across the fields of Engineering, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
In this global classification, which includes 2,000 universities from 96 countries, UPV/EHU's disciplines of Chemical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Education are placed within the top 200. Additionally, Biomedical Engineering, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Psychology, and Mathematics are ranked among the top 300.
Within the state ranking, 55 universities are listed. UPV/EHU solidifies its leadership in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering (ranking first among Spanish universities). It has also improved its positions compared to last year in Artificial Intelligence, Education, Biological Sciences, Psychology, Ecology, and Mathematics, as well as Agricultural Sciences and Earth Sciences. Moreover, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Human Biological Sciences are new additions to this year's edition, not appearing in the 2025 Ranking.
By subject areas, UPV/EHU is among the top ten state universities recognized in 15 subjects across the five main areas: Engineering, Natural Sciences, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
In Engineering, it holds the first position in Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering; the second in Artificial Intelligence; the third in Biomedical Engineering (UPV/EHU was not listed in the 2025 ranking); the fourth in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology; the sixth in Energy Science and Engineering; and the seventh in Civil Engineering.
In the Natural Sciences area, UPV/EHU ranks fourth in Chemistry, and tenth in Earth Sciences and Mathematics.
Within the Life Sciences area, the university's presence is notable in Biological Sciences at sixth place; and in Human Biological Sciences at tenth place.
In Social Sciences, the discipline of Psychology holds the seventh position.
In Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences ranks ninth.
