The fountain, an integral part of the square's landscape since its remodeling in 1984, will be enclosed for five weeks. These works, initiated by Bilbao City Council, involve an investment of approximately 35,000 euros, with potential delays if adverse weather occurs.
Featuring a Greek-inspired aesthetic, the fountain includes four spouts and basins dedicated to the four elements (fire, earth, water, and air), combining metallic parts with white marble elements. This intervention addresses the fountain's deterioration over time and a vandalism incident last February.
Planned tasks include cleaning metallic surfaces and removing repainted areas. Additionally, the material will be consolidated with water-repellent products. Other efforts will focus on reconstructing volumes using special resins and replacing parts with marble of the same type and color.
The project aims to restore the original vessel that was located above the spouts. Currently, only the base remains, as the entire assembly was stolen shortly after the fountain's inauguration. Recovering this piece involved extensive research in municipal archives to find the original sketches designed by architect Ramón de Lecea, ensuring the replacement remains faithful to the original design. The small scaffolding required for the work is already installed in Unamuno Square to ensure public safety.
