Johan Sorozabal and Gorka Mugartegi Atain have become the first male semifinalists of the Bilbao Iron Cup in cesta punta, a competition that awards points for the Jai Alai League circuit.

The forward from Biarritz and the defender from Markina-Xemein defeated debutant Eñaut Astelarra and Unai Lekerika this Friday at the Club Deportivo fronton, which was packed with an enthusiastic crowd. This victory marks their second win in the quarter-final league stage, following their triumph over Emeric Libois and Ion Ibarluzea (15-10 and 15-12) in the first round. The latter pair will now compete for the second semifinal spot against the Gernika combination.
Astelarra made his professional debut with the expected uncertainties, facing a reliable and high-paced duo. Sorozabal possesses a powerful shot, while Mugartegi Atain has a strong backhand. The yellow-clad players dominated with live ball play, leading to errors from the Gernika-Lumo puntista, who, despite his bravery, showed the strain of his high-level competition debut. He shone with the ball in the rest of the game but faded after a very tough start.
In the first set, Sorozabal caused damage with his rebounding, an area where his counterpart struggled. The green team led 5-7; however, Sorozabal's speed set the pace, allowing them to reach fifteen points directly.
The second game followed a similar pattern. The Gernika players managed to take a 4-3 lead. An error by Astelarra opened the door for the yellow team's comeback. Mugartegi Atain played comfortably and took control of the long courts. He imposed his game with both his backhand and forehand (he signed the 4-6 score), turning the match around completely. They led 4-7, 5-11, and 8-15. The provincial pair scored points in the rest of the game.
The winner of the match between Libois-Ibarluzea and Astelarra-Lekerika will be the second semifinalist.
