Bilbao has transformed into the European rugby capital this weekend, hosting the two major continental finals at the San Mamés stadium.

Bilbao has transformed into the European rugby capital this weekend, hosting the two major continental finals at the San Mamés stadium. The city anticipates tens of thousands of visitors, primarily from France, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, for an event promising significant economic impact and a festive atmosphere. The fanzone, located in Doña Casilda park, opened its doors at 11 AM.
At midday, the fanzone atmosphere is still calm, with many fans taking the opportunity to have a drink in the shade or visit the official merchandising store. The area also features activities and games with rugby balls, organized by Elorrio Rugby Taldea, aimed at introducing the sport to curious attendees. A massive influx is expected in the mid-afternoon as supporters gather for a procession towards the stadium, located just 500 meters away.
Among the early attendees, a mix of fans of all ages can be observed, including supporters of local clubs like Universitario de Bilbao and even Argentine fans wearing Los Pumas jerseys. However, jerseys from the finalist teams such as Montpellier, Ulster, Leicester, or Union Bordeaux are not yet prevalent, as their fan bases are expected to arrive later.
The food and beverage sector is gearing up for a surge of people. Food stalls are working non-stop, preparing bacon, tortillas, pork loin, and sausages in industrial quantities. "Given that these people have hearty appetites, we must ensure everyone is well-served and leaves satisfied," commented one of the kitchen managers, anticipating a marathon day until closing.

"We've already been warned that it's going to be very busy and we need to be prepared for whatever comes today"

At the drink bars, similar preparations are underway. Staff, experienced from previous events like the Europa League final, are bracing for significant activity. "We've already been warned that it's going to be very busy and we need to be prepared for whatever comes today," explained one of the waitresses. Last year, they used six barrels, and this year they expect "it to be double."
The event has attracted fans from around the world, many of whom are neutral. Such is the case for a group of visitors from the Netherlands who, according to their guide, are in Bilbao simply to enjoy the spectacle. "They are genuinely here to watch a super cool match," the guide explained, noting their lack of preference for any of the finalist teams.

With hotels nearly full and terraces packed, Bilbao is experiencing a celebration that places it back in the European spotlight. The first major fixture is tonight at 9:00 PM with the Challenge Cup final between Montpellier and Ulster. Tomorrow, Saturday, at 3:45 PM, the main event arrives: the Champions Cup final between Leinster and Union Bordeaux. All this under intense heat, with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius and a yellow alert active until 8 PM.
