Renfe will install two elevators at the Lutxana train station in Barakaldo to improve accessibility, facilitating passage for individuals with reduced mobility and parents with baby strollers.

A project to comprehensively improve the accessibility of the Lutxana train station in Barakaldo includes the planned installation of two elevators. This initiative, currently in the drafting phase, aims to ease passenger movement, particularly for individuals with mobility issues or those using baby strollers. The project does not yet have a start date, and the work could extend until 2028.
Currently, the station features a barrier of 60 steps across various sections, posing a challenge for passengers traveling towards Bilbao or needing to change platforms. This intervention addresses a long-standing demand from local residents, whose neighborhood association has previously described the station's condition as "total neglect" and has reported non-compliance with current accessibility regulations.
With this development in Lutxana, Renfe will finalize accessibility upgrades across both of Barakaldo's train stations. Previously, three elevators were installed at the Desertu station to facilitate platform changes, and a new entrance building and a renovated underpass were constructed at Murrieta. These accessibility works, which faced a two-and-a-half-year delay, involved an investment exceeding 4.6 million euros.
Furthermore, ETS (Euskal Trenbide Sarea) has two other projects underway at this station. One aims to transform part of the infrastructure into a branch of the Railway Museum of Azpeitia and promote Bizkaia's industrial heritage, already incorporating improvements like an external ramp. Renfe, meanwhile, will renew windows and carpentry to enhance protection against vandalism, with work expected to commence this summer.
