Portugalete is commemorating the 89th anniversary of the Civil War bombings, recalling the attacks that resulted in 19 fatalities. The City Council, the Gogora Institute, and the Oroituz association have organized various events to restore «the dignity they deserve in the country's history» to the victims and «learn to not repeat».
Among the events scheduled throughout this month, a significant highlight is the publication of a monograph that compiles data, information, and photographs from the proclamation of the Second Republic in Portugalete to the early years of the Franco regime. This work is the result of three years of effort.
Furthermore, several other activities are planned: today, starting at 12:00 PM, a guided tour will take place through the historic town center, visiting the areas most affected by the bombings. The memory map has also been expanded and completed, featuring routes that indicate various shelters and hospitals from the conflict.
Additionally, until the 29th, an exhibition on childhood during the war will be held at Gaztelan. On the 19th, at Santa Clara, a photographic exhibition showcasing the bombed buildings in the town will commence. On the 16th, at Ballonti, the documentary 'Popel-Erraustxak-Cenizas' will be presented, and on the 22nd, an institutional and popular tribute will be held for those who suffered during the war.
