The event, featuring a 3.5-kilometer route, highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) from a global and person-centered perspective. According to organizers, autism is the fastest-growing disability worldwide, necessitating significant social and political attention.
The Apnabi Autismo Bizkaia association has been supporting families with individuals affected by ASD since 1978. The organization notes that late diagnoses are common, indicating that many undiagnosed cases will emerge in the coming years. In Bizkaia, there are over 10,000 people with autism, and Apnabi assists approximately 2,200 of them, suggesting a significant number remain undiagnosed.
“"At this moment, it is the disability that is growing the most in the world. We are encountering very, very relevant figures, and this requires a social and political approach. It is important that it be addressed from a global and person-centered perspective."
The march commenced at 10:30 AM from Santurtzi's fishing port, where the local mayor and Apnabi's president cut the inaugural ribbon. The route concluded in the courtyard of Las Viñas public school, featuring games, sports activities, recreational areas, and information about autism.
“"This day is not just a celebration, but a demand."
