Osakidetza has begun recruiting patients at the OSI Bilbao-Basurto for the European SHAPE project, aiming to enhance the functional recovery of elderly cancer patients after hospital discharge.

Osakidetza has initiated patient recruitment at the OSI Bilbao-Basurto for the European SHAPE project («Hospital System for Physical Activity and Active Participation»), an international research initiative focused on facilitating the functional recovery of elderly individuals after medical discharge. The study specifically targets cancer patients over 65 in Bilbao and its surrounding areas, aiming to improve their mobility and autonomy.
The European trial will involve approximately 100 cancer patients in Basurto, out of a total of 500 across Europe, who exhibit frailty or functional limitations upon discharge. Participants will be randomly assigned to two groups: a control group receiving usual post-discharge care, and an intervention group undertaking a tailored adapted physical exercise program. This intervention will last 14 weeks and comprise 26 supervised sessions focusing on strength, balance, endurance, and flexibility, available in both in-person and remote formats.
Elena Galve, head of section for Osakidetza's Oncology Service at OSI Bilbao-Basurto and lead local investigator, along with Borja López de San Vicente, oncologist and sub-investigator, emphasize that “for a person with cancer, maintaining or regaining physical capacity can help them manage their daily life and better cope with fatigue and loss of strength.” The program will be adjusted to each individual's clinical and functional situation.
The SHAPE project has a total global funding of nearly 2 million euros (1,956,154.34 €), with 118,850 euros allocated to the participation of OSI Bilbao-Basurto and the Biobizkaia Institute. Entities from Spain, France, and Portugal are involved. The Osakidetza and Biobizkaia team will specifically focus their research on cancer patients. This initiative aligns with the strategic axes of the Euskadi Health Plan 2030 and the Basque Health Pact, prioritizing chronic care, prevention, personalized care, and organizational innovation.
