Osakidetza positions the Galdakao-Usansolo University Hospital (HUGU) among the most advanced in biological diagnostics, through a comprehensive renovation of its laboratory. This project involves an investment of over 16.2 million euros for the next five years and serves 308,000 inhabitants from the Inland Comarca of Bizkaia and the Ayala Valley in Araba.
This upgrade not only covers the HUGU but also integrates the management of tests from the Gernika-Lumo Hospital (HGL), as well as the activity of the socio-sanitary and Mental Health services within its area of influence.
The core of this transformation is an advanced fully automated system. This infrastructure has enabled the centralization and optimization of sample management, achieving key operational milestones: integration of all urgent tests (biochemistry, hematology, urine, etc.) into a 24-hour operational laboratory, guarantee of absolute traceability for each sample, reduction of the blood volume needed for analyses, and processing a larger volume of activity in a smaller area.
One of the most notable innovations is the incorporation of disruptive technology in hematology with the installation of the first two high-resolution digital scanners at a state level. This system uses Artificial Intelligence to automatically classify and count cells, which not only increases efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, and reduces response time, but also plays a crucial role in the training of future health professionals.
