This new service responds to historical demands from residents in the Las Encartaciones region, providing them with a direct link to La Concordia station in the capital of Bizkaia. Previously, the only connection was via the medium-distance train between Santander and Bilbao, a service that frequently drew user complaints due to regular incidents.
The C-5 line will include stops at Carranza, Villaverde de Trucíos, Artzentales, Traslaviña, Mimetiz, and Aranguren stations. At Aranguren, passengers can transfer to the C-4 line, which serves an average of 94,000 monthly travelers, to reach Bilbao.
These new services, representing an annual investment of up to 900,000 euros by the Basque Government, will increase weekly train circulations in the area by 85%, reaching approximately one hundred services combining Cercanías and Medium Distance. This was stated by the Minister of Mobility.
The C-5 rail shuttle between Carranza and Aranguren has been launched following the completion of the line's electrification by Adif, the public company under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. With the works finalized, the units operating the C-4 line can now extend their route to Carranza.
The Barik card will be accepted, and Cercanías fares will apply. Additionally, users of the C-5 line can use short-distance transport tickets and season passes, valid until the end of 2026 for frequent travelers. Schedules are available on the Renfe website, but it is advisable to check them in advance, as they may be adjusted to optimize waiting times and connections between the C-4 and C-5 lines.
