Four people have been arrested for serious disobedience, resistance, and an attack on an authority agent during incidents recorded early this Saturday afternoon at Loiu Airport, upon the arrival of members of the 'Global Sumud Flotilla'.
The arrival, which was not previously communicated to the Ertzaintza (Basque Police), coincided with the comings and goings of Rugby final fans. The behaviour of some individuals in the concentration obstructed the normal circulation of people leaving the airport's departure area, and led to confrontations with Ertzaintza officers, who had to use their standard batons due to the resistance from the gathered individuals.
Following the events, the Ertzaintza's Internal Affairs Department has immediately launched an investigation to verify if the officers' actions comply with current instructions. Furthermore, the Security Department has informed the Basque Police Control and Transparency Commission about the police action and the events that transpired.
The Security Councillor, Bingen Zupiria, has requested an urgent appearance before the Commission for Institutions, Public Governance, and Security of the Basque Parliament to provide the necessary explanations. Zupiria has requested that this appearance take place next Tuesday, the day the Commission is already convened to discuss other planned matters.
Bingen Zupiria and department officials regret what happened and commit to providing a response: "we will try to clarify the incidents that occurred and any potential responsibilities as soon as possible," stated the councillor.
On another note, after the relevant proceedings were completed at police facilities, three of the arrested individuals have been released, although they must appear before the Judicial Authority when summoned.
