The tower of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes church in Getxo has become a sanctuary for a pair of peregrine falcons, whose lives can now be observed in real-time. The recent installation of a monitored nest box allows for the live tracking of these birds' reproductive process and their adaptation to the urban environment.
According to the City Council, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local biodiversity. The stable presence of these aerial predators marks a significant milestone, as they are the first individuals to breed in an urban setting within the municipality and across Euskadi. Their establishment paves the way for new actions aimed at promoting native fauna in human-populated areas.

The ecological utility of these animals extends further. Their diet helps regulate the population of abundant species like pigeons and starlings, whose proliferation can lead to health issues in densely populated areas. This establishes a natural control, reducing the need for artificial interventions.
The project was made possible through cooperation between conservation specialists, a company dedicated to urban wildlife control, and the parish itself. The online broadcast will allow the public to observe the behavior of these raptors, fostering environmental awareness.
