The Mayor of Leioa, Iban Rodríguez, highlighted the lives and achievements of figures such as Marlene Dietrich, Alan Turing, Sara Josephine Baker, Lili Elbe, and Truman Capote in a municipal campaign aimed at breaking stereotypes about the LGTBIQ+ community. "If prejudices had managed to silence them, today the world would be less free and advanced," stated the mayor.
In this campaign, their experiences will be shared through short videos, narrated by notable figures including singer Crisha Ibarra, influencer Pelayo García, local shopkeeper Gloria Otal, president of the Errezpetuz Association Sarai Montes, and actor Diego Pérez.
The Leioa City Council has utilized the period between March 17th, the International Day Against LGTBIQ+phobia, and June 28th, International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day, to launch this awareness and sensitization initiative under the slogan "Aurreiritziak hautsi ditzagun / Rompamos los prejuicios" (Let's break prejudices). "This campaign emphasizes the idea that in a world still marked by labels, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression do not define a person's talent, using the lives of some of the era's pioneers and transgressors who defined themselves as part of the LGTBIQ+ collective and left their mark on history as examples," explained the mayor.
Additionally, other initiatives will take place for these commemorations: from Monday, June 1st, to Sunday, June 28th, the Kultur Leioa library will host the LGTBIQ+ bibliographic exhibition, a proposal to celebrate diversity through reading and visibility. The play Dysphoria by playwright María Goiricelaya will be performed on Thursday, June 4th, at 7:00 PM in the Kultur auditorium. It is a fictional monologue, starring actress Gemma Matarranz, focusing on the Trans Law, gender fraud, and society's struggle for the ethical non-violation of this norm. Finally, on Friday, June 26th, at 8:30 PM, the Aldapa auditorium will host the concert by Sweet Rage.
