Leioa experienced a special and emotional event this past Saturday as part of its 500th anniversary commemoration. The Marcha a Paso de Peatón concluded in Pinosolo park, drawing over a thousand people to recover the treasures from the "Leioa tiene un Tesoro" initiative, buried 25 years ago.
The march, which started from the Boulevard, reached Pinosolo park. There, more than a thousand Leioa residents unearthed the tupperware containers holding photographs, messages, small objects, and other memories, which saw the light of day again after a quarter of a century underground.
The reunion with childhood moments brought surprises, smiles, and emotional scenes to Pinosolo, rekindling the shared memory of an entire generation. The initiative will also continue: starting September 24, children born in Leioa between 2015 and 2020 can collect a new tupperware in Pinosolo to store objects or memories for the future.
The new treasures will be buried on October 31, allowing another generation to recover them in 25 years.
The day highlighted the importance of citizen participation in the 500th-anniversary program. The City Council aims to continue promoting initiatives where citizens are protagonists, fostering the collective construction of Leioa's history through proposals that unite memory, future, emotion, and celebration.
The mayor of Leioa, Iban Rodriguez Etxebarria, along with the former mayor in 2001, Karmelo Sainz de la Maza, symbolically opened the "treasure" kept by the City Council 25 years ago, connecting the Leioa of the past with the present.
In the evening, the parking lot of the Lamiako Metro station became the epicenter of the celebration with concerts by La M.O.D.A., Janus Lester, and Still Rising. Local band Still Rising, winners of the Hamaika Soinu contest, opened the event at 7:00 PM. They were followed by Janus Lester, and La M.O.D.A. closed the night with an electric and collective concert.
In addition to the concerts, attendees had access to bars, food trucks, and a merchandising area.
