The first section of the Karmelo ascending escalator at Metro Bilbao's Santutxu station has been out of service since late March due to a complex breakdown, awaiting a specific part manufactured in Germany.

According to Metro Bilbao sources, this malfunction affects a crucial gear component that must be custom-made. As this part is produced in Germany, its arrival is anticipated soon to restore service as quickly as possible.
While complex, this type of breakdown is not uncommon. Upon detection of the incident, the standard protocol was activated to ensure the new part reaches the historical territory of Bizkaia with maximum speed, aiming to reinstate the operation of this initial escalator section.
Once the part is manufactured in Germany, transported, and finally arrives at Santutxu station, it will be installed to restore the system. Metro Bilbao has clarified that the breakdown affects only one of the twelve escalator sections at Santutxu station. The other access point, the Zabalbide exit, remains fully operational, and the Karmelo exit also features an elevator that drops users just a few meters from the metro entrance.
