Amaia Agirre, who has served as mayor of Getxo for the past two terms, has announced her decision not to seek re-election in next year's municipal elections. The PNV politician cited personal reasons, stating her goal is to “make way for new people, new perspectives, and new impulses.”
“"My goal is to make way for new people, new perspectives, and new impulses."
Since the announcement of the lehendakari José Antonio Agirre's granddaughter's decision to step down, a name previously unknown to many has gained prominence: Irkus Ansotegi Zulueta. This lawyer from Algorta, though never holding public office, comes from a family with a strong political heritage. He is the son of Luis Mari Ansotegi, a well-known PNV militant, and nephew of Ricardo Ansotegi, former secretary of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar and former parliamentarian.
Ansotegi, a Law graduate from the University of Deusto, owns the Ansotegi management consultancy in Mungia, where he has worked as a lawyer and administrative manager for over 19 years. His political involvement has primarily been within the party's internal structure, earning him recognition at the Algorta batzoki. Now, the three local batzokis—Algorta, Ondarreta, and Andra Mari—are expected to ratify his candidacy for the mayoralty of Getxo.
Beyond his professional and political life, Ansotegi is also a recognized figure in Basque music. As a pandero player, he forms a duo with the acclaimed trikitilari Xabi Aburruzaga from Portugalete. According to various reviews, they have created “one of the most active duos in the Bizkaia scene,” participating in numerous folk events, including the Aitzina Folk festival in Vitoria.
