The Minister of Sustainable Mobility, Susana García Chueca, has emphasized the importance of public transport infrastructure and services as a cohesive element for the territory and society. These statements were made in Bilbao during the opening of the conference on urban regeneration within the BIA Klima 2.0 Forum, organized by the Official College of Basque-Navarrese Architects.
At the opening of the conference, García Chueca highlighted the significance of collective public transport in combating climate change, describing it as a generator of social equality and a "lever to face the challenges our cities have ahead".
The minister stated that public transport management is crucial for achieving "more pleasant cities to live in" and, simultaneously, "bringing opportunities to people in educational, professional, and even health and leisure fields". "Depending on the approach we take to build and manage public services, we will be betting on individualism or collective benefit. This is what we are doing from my department: collaborating in the construction of cities, and also of a society with less inequality and more opportunities for all people, regardless of their place of origin or social situation," she affirmed.
In this regard, she recalled the annual investment made by her department through Euskal Trenbide Sarea and Euskotren, exceeding 300 million euros, to ensure the proper functioning of rail and tram services. "Continuous review and maintenance work aimed at the conservation and improvement of the Basque railway network, as well as its rolling stock, meaning trains and trams," she added.
During her speech in the auditorium of the Guggenheim Museum, García Chueca thanked the work of architecture and engineering professionals for "evaluating projects based on the social benefits they will bring, fighting climate change, planning infrastructure that does not break neighborhoods but unites them, and for knowing how to listen to society".
Finally, the Minister of Sustainable Mobility reviewed the infrastructure currently in planning or construction in Bizkaia, as well as the work being done to reduce the impact of the railway network, such as the elimination of level crossings in Amorebieta, Berriz, or Bedia.
