The Galdakao City Council is finalizing the renovation of the Urreta sports center, which will reopen in the autumn with new facilities and an expanded sports program, supported by a management budget exceeding 12 million euros.

The expansion and renovation works at the Urreta sports center in Galdakao are progressing, with the council planning its reopening for next autumn. The project will introduce new spaces and a broader sports offering, aligning with the municipal strategy to promote citizen well-being.
Amets Iturbe, the Councilor for Social Action, emphasizes that sports are a fundamental tool for community well-being and integral health. The new programming will feature a diverse range of activities, from those combating sedentary lifestyles to high-performance proposals.
Asier Korta, the Sports Councilor, highlights that the new management contract aims to improve citizens' quality of life and address the sports center's historical shortcomings. These enhancements, long demanded by the community, will significantly bolster the municipality's sports services.
The new management contract will span four years with a budget exceeding 12 million euros, an 85% increase compared to the previous one. Additionally, 480,000 euros more per year will be allocated to improve staff working conditions.
From the autumn, the sports center will feature a more modern and spacious gym, including new cardio and strength training zones, along with various other services, as noted by Juanmi Ereño, the municipal head of the Sports Department.
A key new feature will be a roughly 600-square-meter fitness room, designed to become a regional benchmark. This new gym will open earlier than usual, operating from 07:00 AM to Fridays.
Currently, municipal sports services offer around 20 activities with approximately 1,500 participants and 8,500 members. The council anticipates an increase in these figures thanks to the new facilities and expanded offerings.
