The Euskal Hiria 2026 congress, taking place on November 16 and 17 at the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao, will focus on the built city as an opportunity for generating accessible and sustainable housing.

Organized by the Department of Housing and Urban Agenda of the Basque Government with the support of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, this XXIV edition will address how to renovate, reuse, and transform existing structures to offer greener housing, while protecting current neighborhood residents.
The event stems from three key challenges: the difficulty of accessing housing, the climate crisis, and the need for more responsible land use. Under the concept of 're-growth', it will explore how rehabilitation, regeneration, and reuse can enable the existing city to accommodate new housing, services, and activities, thereby improving urban quality and social cohesion.
The sessions will be organized into four areas: governance, land, planning, and financing; circular architecture and transformation of the existing; climate action and public space; and affordability, permanence, and the right to the neighborhood. These axes will connect housing production with the improvement of facilities, local services, green areas, and daily life.

Re-crecer. La ciudad entre los retos de la vivienda y la sostenibilidad

Around thirty specialists will participate, including Duncan Lewis (Scape Architecture), Maurice Lange (Centre for Cities), Ramón Gras (Aretian Urban Analytics and Design), Beatriz Sendín (n’UNDO), Nikki Kamps (Rotterdam Rooftop Days), Anne-Jo Visser (AFWC), and Sonja Trauss (YIMBY), alongside institutional and professional representatives from Euskadi, nationally, and internationally.
