User patience on Metro Bilbao was tested this Wednesday morning. An electronic fault on the tracks at Moyua station led to widespread delays for about an hour and a half across the entire network, also forcing the evacuation of several trains at San Inazio and disrupting the journeys of hundreds of travelers.
Among those affected was Mari Mar Zárate, a resident of Getxo, who was on her way to a dentist appointment in Bilbao. What should have been a routine journey turned into a race against time. "I called to let them know, but it messes up your whole schedule," she explained after taking over 50 minutes to complete the journey between Las Arenas and Abando. Now retired, she acknowledges that such incidents would be even more problematic if she had "more serious commitments."
The breakdown also affected visitors to the city. Julia Sal and her partner, Eric Pérez, were planning to visit the city with their puppy, Bruno, when they became trapped in the endless pauses between the Deusto and San Mamés stations. The young woman had to carry the pet for a significant part of the journey. "There was hardly any room on the metro, it was hot, and my arms were getting tired," she recounted.
Meanwhile, university students Garazi Ortube and Nerea Ruiz also missed their classes on time. The journey between Leioa and Sarriko took longer than expected, and both had to change trains at San Ignazio. After initial moments of concern, the young women took the situation in stride with humor. "At least they don't take attendance," they commented.
Most travelers, some with resignation, opted to adapt to a morning marked by uncertainty. Among them was María Jesús Ortiz, who summarized the feelings of many regular users of the subway. "It's not the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. We see these delays more and more often," she lamented at the end of a journey at the Zazpikaleak station.
