The undergrounding of Abando station in Bilbao's city center will radically change the appearance of the Vizcayan capital, driving ten new projects in addition to the arrival of the High-Speed Train.

This operation, described by municipal authorities as historic, will bring about a profound transformation. Among these, the economic activity hub to be launched by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia stands out.
The provincial institution has confirmed its participation in this significant operation, although its financial contribution has not yet been defined. Officials from the institution have stated that, given the importance of this transformative project for Bizkaia, they will not allow it to go unfulfilled. They emphasized that it offers a comprehensive vision, integrating mobility, urban regeneration, more housing, and greater economic activity.

"The Provincial Council will not allow any transformative project to remain undone."

Abando will become a priority communication hub for Bizkaia, connecting the Metro and Bizkaibus with the High-Speed Train. Thus, it will be the main connection point between Bizkaia and Europe and the peninsula, a crucial step in improving the territory's public transport system.
The new space created by burying the railway tracks, which will gain 130,000 square meters, will also host economic activity. It has been agreed with the Bilbao City Council that the Provincial Council will have a plot within the new urban development for an innovative project that generates employment and opportunities.
Municipal authorities have highlighted the project's importance for the city. They have stated that, just as the Metro and the Guggenheim Museum paved the way, the High-Speed Train will not only reposition Bilbao in the world but will make the world a larger Bilbao. This project includes a dozen smaller initiatives, such as The Southern Gate, the House of Culture, new parks, and the Bizkaia economic activity hub, among others.
