The president of the PP of Bizkaia, Amaya Fernández, has positively assessed that Bilbao can continue to be a host city for the World Cup 2030. "It was unacceptable to be left out of an international event of this importance and magnitude. Because where Basque society sees sport, football, and economic opportunities, the PNV only sees identity and nationalist issues," she highlighted.
Fernández stated that the jeltzale party "has backtracked due to the pressure from the Basque citizenry," who "have not believed the false official narrative." The PP insists, however, that they will remain "very vigilant" to ensure "they cannot play any more tricks to leave us out of this international event." "The deranged electoral race that the PNV and Bildu are following is what has led them to make a mistake," she emphasized.
Regarding Euskadi proposing a joint bid between Bilbao and San Sebastián, Fernández assured it is "the least important thing." "They have chosen an intermediate path because they had made a mistake. Society has given them a slap on the wrist and they have presented this formula, but the important and relevant thing is that Euskadi and Bizkaia will have the World Cup 2030," she stated. For the popular party, "sectarianism weighed more" in the debate. "Today, another step is taken towards the hope of having an international sporting event in an international city like Bilbao. If they continue making decisions based on identity, this will be the first of many," concluded Fernández.
On the other hand, EH Bildu parliamentarian Josu Aztiria stated on EiTB's program En Jake that the "calm analysis announced nine days ago has turned into a proposal that I don't know if it was made with much improvisation." The sovereignist coalition has opposed Bilbao and San Sebastián being host cities for the World Cup 2030 and stated that "the disagreements between the PNV and PSE" regarding this matter "had a lot to do" with the proposal sent to FIFA on Sunday night. "The data is eloquent and the only institution that wins is FIFA," he noted.
Elkarrekin Podemos also expressed surprise at the news that Euskadi will present a joint bid between Bilbao and San Sebastián. Ana Viñals, spokesperson for the purple coalition in the Bilbao City Council, stated that they "will wait for them to be held accountable and provide the necessary explanations in the appearance we have requested from the Municipal Government." However, she criticized that "it is not serious to hide from Basque institutions with press releases."
