Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Basque Government, at the proposal of the Minister of Education, Begoña Pedrosa, has approved a maximum allocation of 1,633,333 euros for grants to support the Linguistic Management Projects (PGL) of private contracted schools during the 2026-2027 academic year.
These projects allow each school to analyze its linguistic reality and establish objectives and actions to build plurilingual and intercultural environments centered on Basque. Key priorities include fostering the use of Basque, ensuring students achieve the established communicative competence, and contributing to the development of competencies in other curriculum languages.
Furthermore, the projects aim to deepen the knowledge and practice of Basque culture and develop teaching and learning processes considering each school's intercultural context.
The Linguistic Project is based on a diagnosis of the situation of curricular languages and those present in the school and its environment. From this analysis, each school implements measures to enhance communicative and cultural competence in Basque, promote its daily use, and develop students' plurilingual competence and linguistic and cultural coexistence.
The project must be linked to the entire school, be coherent with its pedagogical documents, and have the consensus of the educational community. It includes situation analysis, linguistic objectives, linguistic approach, strategic plan, and evaluation indicators, among other elements.
To carry out this work, during the 2026-2027 academic year, the management of each school will designate a linguistic manager, who will be a teacher from the school. Additionally, schools will receive technical support from the Institute for the Learning of Basque and Languages, whose professionals will provide guidance on project design, sociolinguistics, language didactics, Basque culture transmission, linguistic leadership, interculturality, and the Basque language acquisition for newly arrived students.
The grants will fund teacher release hours for the creation, development, and evaluation of the Linguistic Management Project. The Department will also organize courses, seminars, and training activities for teachers related to these projects.
The call is part of the Department of Education's strategy to strengthen students' linguistic competence and move towards a plurilingual and intercultural educational system, promoting the learning and use of Basque and proficiency in the curriculum's various languages. The goal is for students to achieve the required linguistic levels while facilitating the adequate learning of other subjects and competencies.
Interested schools will have one month from the day after the Order's publication in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country to submit their application, which must be done electronically. They must also present the current Linguistic Project plan for the academic year.
