Residents in the lower area of Getxo's Old Port will be able to live without fear of landslides from October onwards, after nearly a decade of complaints. The City Council has awarded the project to stabilize the slope behind two properties adjacent to the coastal promenade, concluding a process initiated last March.
Municipal reports confirmed ground movements, masonry wall deformations, and impacts on nearby elements. Studies detected "a loss of stability associated with the geological deterioration of the area and the pressure exerted on the retaining structures," fueling residents' fears for years. Additionally, the existing wall showed "bulges of several centimeters," and "imposing holes" are visible among the rocks.
The current intervention focuses on consolidating approximately 700 square meters of the rocky face. This involves constructing a screen of twenty deep-anchored micropiles, connected by a reinforced concrete beam to withstand thrusts. The project also includes subsequent monitoring of the site.
Due to the operation's complexity and the buildings' proximity, temporary access points will need to be established from Satistegi for machinery. The plan even includes the temporary relocation of some families during the most delicate phases of the work.
