According to the City Council, the objective of this initiative is to correct behaviors that pose a risk to road safety. Research indicates that driver distraction, particularly due to mobile phone use, is a significant contributor to traffic accidents.
“"It has been verified that when a person talks on a mobile phone while driving, they fail to identify 40% of traffic signs and indications, their average speed decreases by 12%, and their reaction time diminishes in the face of any unforeseen event."
This risk is not limited to merely talking on the phone but also includes checking calls, reading or sending messages, and using applications. The use of headphones while driving presents a similar hazardous situation.
Investigations into traffic accidents have highlighted the critical role of distractions in driving, with mobile phone use being identified as one of the most reprehensible behaviors.
