The Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia have reached an agreement for the construction and financing of Bilbao Metro Line 4. This accord, set to be signed in the coming weeks, includes a new 6.7-kilometer route and six new stations, aiming to connect the high-lying southern neighborhoods of Bilbao, such as Irala and Rekalde, with the sustainable public transport system.
“"This agreement is the result of extensive negotiation work to ensure that residents of Bilbao's southern high-lying neighborhoods have the metro connection they have long demanded."
The head of sustainable mobility emphasized that Line 4, alongside other major projects underway this legislative term, is “key for the coming decades in Bizkaia's mobility.” This initiative, she noted, will undoubtedly enable the historical territory to become a benchmark for sustainable mobility.
To achieve this, Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS), a public entity under the Department of Sustainable Mobility, is concurrently advancing with the necessary studies and projects prior to the tender for the works. The goal is to proceed with the utmost agility so that Line 4 can begin construction as soon as possible, with the aim of starting works before the end of 2027.
