A new Haurreskola has opened in the Txurdinaga neighborhood of Bilbao, expanding the public educational offering for children aged 1 to 2 years. The new center is located in the Early Childhood Education building of the CEIP Txurdinaga and will offer 52 new places.
This initiative is the result of collaboration between the Basque Government and the Bilbao City Council to expand the Haurreskolak network and meet the needs of families. This morning, the Minister of Education, Begoña Pedrosa, and the Councilor for Education of the Bilbao City Council, Eider Bilbao, visited the new facilities.
The Txurdinaga Haurreskola features four classrooms adapted for the 1 to 2-year-old age group, as well as other spaces designed for children's needs. Minister Begoña Pedrosa highlighted the value of Haurreskolak as an essential public service, stating that "guaranteeing free access to education from the earliest years is not just a social measure, it is a strategic commitment to equal opportunities".
Councilor Eider Bilbao, for her part, emphasized that "with these actions, Bilbao's Haurreskolak offering grows in places and classrooms, and Txurdinaga now has its school within the neighborhood's own school. We have achieved this without building a new facility, by reorganizing what we already had, which is the most efficient way to work".
The opening of Txurdinaga joins efforts made in recent years to strengthen the network in various Bilbao neighborhoods, such as Indautxu, Larreagaburu, San Inazio, Zamakola, Elejabarri, and now Txurdinaga. Next academic year, the Ametzola project will also create more places in Bilbao.
Regionally, Biscay offers 105 centers and 3,917 places, and across the Basque Country, the network comprises 253 centers and 9,521 places. The new Txurdinaga Haurreskola integrates into this public network aiming to guarantee access to education from early ages and provide families with a local, free, and quality service.
